Most of the shops in Venice should be open, but the place will be absolutely packed. Good luck in finding any accomodation at this point - you'll really need it if you haven't booked yet.

Italy can be cold in March but where I live in Spain (Málaga) the weather can be quite warm and sunny. The Canary Isles would be warmer, though being spring you could expect inclement weather anywhere.
I was in Rome last May. It was warm and sunny but cooler than I'm used to here in Spain.

Yes, Rome just gets crowded during Holy Week. Other than that, there aren't too many tourists in March. It's usually between the 50's and the upper to mid 60's (F). It's not Chicago cold, it's more like Texas cold. I would go in March :) Good luck! L'Italia e molta bella!

The ancient Romans had a very varied diet, eggs, cheese, olives, lettuce, artichokes, squash, broccoli, and many different kinds of game and domestic meats.

Here is a recipe taken from a cookbook I have which translates the ancient cookbook by Apicius - it is very simple to make:

1 round white bread (the kind called ''boule'' that is in the specialty bread area of the supermarket)
Honey
Light olive oil

Slice the bread and heat the oil in a frying pan on Medium High..you don't need a lot of oil, about 2 tablespoons.- you don't want to soak the bread in oil. You may need to add more oil as you go..it's kind of like making grilled cheese sandwiches. Once the bread piece is are nicely browned, remove and immediately pour some honey over it. Serve with greek style olives and ricotta cheese.

Another recipe is for meatballs in a pea sauce..never tried it so not sure how it will come out:

1/2 lb ground meat (pork is a good choice)
1/4 tsp salt
For the sauce
1 large bag frozen peas
3/4 cup dry red wine
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
3/4 tablespon Asian fish sauce, or replace with soy or salt to taste'
1/4 teasp cumin seeds
1/4 teaspoon celery seeds
1 teaspoon honey

Add salt to the meat and make small meatballs about the size of a walnut out of it. Place on an oven sheet and cook until they are browned (375 F) about 15 mins or so. While meatballs are baking, boil the peas until they are cooked through, blend them with the remaining sauce ingredients in a blender and put the sauce back into a saucepan..adding a bit of water is the sauce is really thick. Add meatballs to the sauce and cook slowly for about 15 minutes (you don't want the sauce to boil furiously - just kind of splutter) Stir frequently to keep it from burning.
