I say "preferably", because that's the requirement to apply for a Schengen Visa (granting you access to Italy and other European countries). As an American tourist, you don't need a visa for such a short stay and they would probably let you in as long as your passport is valid for the duration of your entire stay. Anyway, based on your dates, you're good to go. The validity of your passport should “preferably” exceed your intended stay by at least three months.
